Writing

Did great-grandfather really live with the Red Indians? Precisely why did so many of my ancestors drown in the Leeds-Liverpool canal? Am I related to Tess of the D’Urbervilles? These are just some of the bizarre questions I have attempted to answer in recent writing commissions.

My writing range is wide and flexible. For family history magazines, I’ve looked at how to use sources as diverse as diaries, obituaries and, even, funeral bills, to discover more about your ancestors. I’ve also used real stories to examine popular themes in nineteenth-century history such as emigration, industrialization, mining, and women’s work. Recent literary articles have included pieces on E. M. Forster’s Passage to India and Dodie Smith’s I Capture the Castle.

My past publications include books on the nineteenth-century governess (The Governess: An Anthology, Sutton Press, 2003) and on travellers in Scandinavia (The Northern Utopia: British Perceptions of Norway in the Nineteenth Century, Rodopi, 2003).

You can sample my articles and books on this website and link to the magazines and publishers with which they are associated.
